Dr. Dre's Son Curtis Young Gives Details About Meeting His Father

Curtis Young found out Dr. Dre was his father when he was 12 years old. Three years later, Young's mother and her then-boyfriend separated, which caused Young to pursue meeting his father. Five years later, when he was 20, Curtis Young met the rapper-producer for the first time.

"I started trying to meet him and hiring lawyers, whatever I could do," he says to XXL. "It was rough. It was really hard to finally get the DNA test and meet him."

Young wound up getting the contact information for one of Dr. Dre's lawyers and that's how he was finally able to confirm Dr. Dre's paternity. Young says that this period of time was trying for him and he had to find his own identity.

"You’re going through all this and you’re trying to find yourself, that’s a whole different period I went through," he says. "I was like, 'I just want to be just like him. I’m going to wear khakis and I’m going to be a gangster.' It just really wasn’t me. I grew up in Compton, not that I’m no punk or anything, but I never had that in me. Everybody knew me and I was cool. I was the ladies man. Something that I had to grow into was just being Curtis Young. Curtis Young is a grown and sexy vibe, just talking about the life stories that I’ve been through. I had it rough. It’s not your average story."

Young is working on his own music now, but is also slated to appear as his father in the forthcoming Dogg Pound For Life movie.

"There’s no sequel to Straight Outta Compton," he says, referring to the N.W.A biopic that portrays his father. "This is the Dogg Pound For Life movie. I’m cast to play my father. That is official. Right now they’re looking for funding. There are talks with 50 Cent and some other people. The script is pretty much done. I can’t really speak on the characters but I just got photos of who’s going to be playing who. I’m just really excited to be a part of it."

Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger, members of Tha Dogg Pound, are spearheading the film, which is yet to sign a director.

"We’re all at the beginning stages," Young says. "We’ve got to get it funded, but they’ll get it funded. It wouldn’t make sense for someone to not fund that movie."
